Multimedia files & Internet

Internet is nothing but a network of computers, through which people across the globe communicate, share music, video, data files & information. As far use of internet for sharing music & video is concerned, a podcast is latest terms gaining popularity. A podcast is a series of digital media files, either audio or video that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. Podcasts are digital media files (most often audio, but they can be video as well), which are produced in a series. You can subscribe to a series of files, or podcast, by using a piece of software called a pod catcher. Once you subscribe, your pod catcher periodically checks to see if any new files have been published, and if so, automatically downloads them onto your computer or portable music player for you to listen to or watch, whenever you wish. Podcasting attracts people who want the ability to choose their own content (much like using the Internet), instead of the TV and radio model of broadcast where you tune in and select from one of the programs playing. It shares common ground with other time shifting technologies like TIVO, which allow you to download programs and watch whenever you want. Many people like the convenience of always having fresh material loaded on their iPods or personal music players, and listen to their podcasts throughout the day. Today on internet you can choose your own favorite movies podcast & watch the movie.

Streaming video files is another popular multimedia application to view videos, movies online. Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a streaming provider. Streaming video is content sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer in real time. With streaming video or streaming media, a Web user does not have to wait to download a file to play it. Instead, the media is sent in a continuous stream of data and is played as it arrives.

However, many video users & online streaming media users often complain about the slow downloading of video. It irritates the user since the video stops for few minutes then starts & repeats the process again till the whole media file gets downloaded. When computer users see such streaming video problems, they are actually complaining about a jerky, slow internet connection that will pause periodically (for several seconds) making it difficult to watch the video with any degree of continuity.

Streaming video requires a connection free of traffic jams. For dial up internet connections, a busy phone line can have the effect on slow streaming of video files.
